Day 1

Hanoi

Fly to Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital. Arrival transfer to your hotel.

Afternoon walking tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter ending with a beer (or two) in a local bar.

Day 2

Hanoi

Morning excursion to the Hanoi railway tracks. The railway tracks are sometimes located metres away from the entrance doors of houses. A walk along the railway line will give you a very different insight into the city. Great for photography too.

Free afternoon for optional excursions.

You might also consider a visit to Ngoc Son Temple, located in the middle of the Hoan Kiem Lake, where you can visit a traditional, local and charming coffee house. Do try Vietnam’s local coffee: Cà phê sữa đá (Iced coffee) and if you feel more adventurous, you can also try the ‘Egg coffee’!

Evening excursion to the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi, which has its roots in an art form that dates back to the 11th century. The tradition of water puppet theatre stems from a time when rice paddy fields were flooded and villagers would make entertainment by standing in the waist-deep water with the puppets performing over the water.

Day 3

Hanoi - Hue

Travel by Reunification Express train from Hanoi to Hue, a leisurely journey of about 12 hours.

The single-track railway line was built by the French between 1899 and 1936 to connect Hanoi with Saigon, a route of 1726km.

Arrival transfer from the station to your hotel in Hue.

Day 4

Hue

Khai Dinh King was Vietnam’s Emperor from 1916 to 1925. His tomb represents a fusion of traditional Vietnamese style and modern influence, as it is almost entirely made of concrete and includes many European architectural details.
Then you will visit the Forbidden Purple City, located in the Citadel of Hue, which was badly damaged during the
Tet offensive of 1968. Established as the capital of unified Viet Nam in 1802, Hue was not only the political but also the cultural and religious centre under the Nguyen dynasty until 1945. Hue was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

After lunch in a local restaurant you will board a dragon boat for a boat trip on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda. Next, if time allows, you will have a short cycle ride to Dong Ba market (open until 8:00pm).

Day 5

Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An

Travel by road from Hue on the Hai Van Pass, which once formed the boundary between the kingdoms of Đại Việt and Champa. It is the highest and longest pass in Vietnam, with the North-South National Highway zigzagging through it for almost 20 km.

We include a stop at Da Nang to visit the Museum of Cham Sculpture and will explore the villages around the Marble Mountains, where skilful artisans produce handicrafts of granite and marble.

Continue by road to Hoi An.

Day 6

Hoi An

Half-day walking tour to take in the Japanese Covered Bridge, Pottery Museum, Tan Ky House and Chua Ong Pagoda.

Free afternoon.

Day 7

Hoi An

This culinary excursion starts with a visit to the colourful local market to select ingredients for a class in Vietnamese cooking and includes a trip on the Hoi An River and a herb-garden walk. Cooking lessons will culminate in (hopefully) a delicious lunch.

Please let us know any special meal requirements or food intolerances,

.

Day 8

Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City

Departure transfer to Da Nang airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City where you will be met and driven to your hotel.

City tour of key highlights of Ho Chi Minh City, including the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame and the Saigon Central Post Office (designed by Gustave Eiffel). The tour ends with a visit to Ben Thanh Market.

Day 9

Ho Chi Minh City

Visit the Cu Chi tunnels which played a significant role in the Vietnam War, which they refer to as the American War, which lasted from 1954 until 1975.

In the evening visit the night markets and take a street food tour by Vespa scooter, an appealing way to get an insight into life in Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 10

Mekong Delta

This full day excursion from Ho Chi Minh City will begin at the colourful Cai Be floating market, cruising among local barges full of fruit and vegetables. Stop at local home factories to observe the traditional procedure of making rice ice paste, coconut sweets and other specialties. Lunch is included at an Indochinese villa located by the river, in a lush tropical garden surrounded with fruit plantations.

The excursion continues at Dong Hoa Hiep Island with a visit to the Mandarin House dating from 1890 before proceding to Vinh Long, passing beautiful landscapes along the Dong Phu canal. Make a stop at An Binh ancient church or Tam Ho’s nursery garden on the way back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Days 11-14

Fly to Sihanoukville

Onward Ferry to one of the Cambodia Islands such as
Koh Rong, Koh Ta Kiev or Koh Russel.

Sihanoukville is a great beach destination in Cambodia and a good place for a few days of relaxation. During your stay we recommend a boat trip to Ream National Park which is home to a number of rare birds and animals. We also suggest visits to Bamboo Island, Chalus Island and Ta Kiev Island, fishing trips with local fishermen. For ultimate relaxation and a high-end resort, we recommend Song Saa, a private island reached in 40 minutes by boat from Sihanoukville.

Day 15

Depart Sihanoukville

Return from the beach by ferry to Sihanoukville and transfer to the airport in time to check in for your flight home.
